Computer Engineering has had a very short history due
to it starting up only a short forty years ago, but actual computers go back
much further than that. Actual people used to have the title of “computer” just
for being able to figure out complex math problems. Even before that an abacus
was considered a computer because it helped a person work with numbers. Actual
machines did not show up until much later. Major interests in computing
machines first started around the 60s and 70s because of the first commercially
usable computers being released. The
first school to have computer engineering as a major was Case Western Reserve
University, which was in 1971. Around ten years ago there were 170 computer
engineering programs in the United States.
Throughout history, computer engineers have made huge contributions to the world, whether it is from the common personal computer to more complex machines that could be used to keep people alive longer. The world would be a much different place without some of the breakthroughs brought on by computers. Think about all of the items you have in your home or dorm that have some type of computer in them. Some of the major ones are iPods, cell phones, basically anything digital. If you’ve ever taken apart your toys when you were little and noticed a type of circuit board in them then a computer could have been responsible for that.
There are many different subsections that make up computer engineering making it a very broad thing to major in. Some of these sections include coding, networking, robotics and circuitry, which allow more people to try and find out exactly what they are interested in. Coding, which is one of the fields that I am trying to excel in, deals with the different ways that the computer system can be protected from different types of threats and the creation of software. These threats include viruses and hackers that want information from a computer. Networking is the way that computers communicate with each other through the use of networks. If it involves connecting to the internet or simply transferring data between two computers, networking is involved in one way or another. These sections are important because of the way that society is becoming more and more dependent on technology.
